This is a plea really - for branches to elaborate better on the subject matter of their meetings.
Yesterday, I tore through my morning in order to attend a meeting in the afternoon on the other side of the Wirral.
The subject advertised was Environmental Update, which I naively took to be the latest developments in environmental legislation, instead it was someone going on about the benefits of being a chartered environmentalist???
This isn't the first time I have been caught out like this, feeling that the afternoon has been wasted.
Also, when you do try to get information (eg: Environmental Update - Energy / Waste - is the subject - wasting energy or energy from waste) then you still get no response.
We all (well most of us) have busy schedules and the last thing we want is another wasted afternoon, so it would be nice to get a little bit more info on the subject matter.
Is this me just having a bad day or does anyone else have this gripe??
Regards
Mike

Your Branch Secretary should be able to give you exact details of any proposed lecture or seminar, they will have booked the speaker involved and will want to know what is being given out as subject matter.

Details on this page header under - Branches !

Thanks for response.
However I go to several branch meetings around the north of England depending on the subject matter being discussed.
On the occasion where I have tried to get further information there has been no response.
My point is that there should be more detail on the diary, eg:
Environmental Update : the joys of being a chartered environmentalist, or;
Environmental Update : Legislative Changes.
Not too much to ask is it??

Mike

I'm with you on this. When time allows I attend a some branch meetings in the South and have found the quality of the speakers to be vary dramatically. Some have been excellent but others have been very very poor. I realise that these people give up their time for free but when all they are trying to do is flog you their latest product I would rather they didn't bother.

I'm not sure of a way around this other than IOSH or the branches sharing feedback about speakers they use.

As someone who has spoken at several branch meetings I am always surprised that there seems to be no formal arrangement to obtain feedback.

I would have thought that this is something that the IOSH secretariat could produce as a form for participants which would then be returned to them. They could then evaluate who are the good speakers and who not so good and pass this on to branch secretaries. This could help the latter ensure that they book good speakers.

There - perhaps I have talked myself out of a job (albeit unpaid!)

I am a member of Merseyside branch and attended the above meeting I have to say I totally share your concerns. I was expecting to here about the latest updates in environmental maters which were clearly not forthcoming.

I would like say also however that I attend 95% of Merseyside branch meetings and the speakers are usually of excellent quality. With the branch committee putting in many hours of voluntary work to arrange things, this meeting however I agree with you did not provide what I believed it was going to. Still you can win them all!!
