I placed this on the careers forum, but think I may get more of a response here!

I have been fortunate enough to be invited for a 2nd Interview for a very good position.

In this case I have been asked to conduct a presentation from the following scenario -

"You have been asked by a senior manager to develop a campaign to reduce accidents resulting in hand injuries (cuts, nips etc).

Please give a presentation on what training and information you would design and distribute. Include examples of written material."

Not been given too much time to organise this, hence my request for some assistance amongst the fraternity -

The issues that spring to mind for the campaign would be -

Risk Assessments (provision of the training & process in identifying the risks which result in hand injuries, provision of the appropriate controls to reduce such injuries)

This could incorporate additional key contributory factors from Manual Handling (lifting of equipment, motoprs, pumps etc), use of workplace tools, machinery guarding (exposure from drive belts, gears, etc) lifting operations (use of lifting equipment), PPE, etc, etc

Has anyone out there got a owerpoint presentation that draws on smilar issues - obviosly will not get anything exact, so I appreciate that some modification will be required from my part

This is a useful site:

http://siri.uvm.edu/ppt/

and go to 'Presentations' there's lots to download and you can adjust after saving to your own PC.

There's also a load of useful stuff in other areas of this site.

Hope it helps.

To put a different slant on things, I am very much for recognising those who get it right.

Normally a manager will look at a group of people and, if they are being safe, will walk by without saying a word.

I do it the other way. If four out of five of your people are using appropriate hand protection then I will tell them how much that pleases me. Number five gets a sorowfull look.

Recognition for those who are good. Reinforcement of good, safe behaviour, Reward (social time with the boss) for doing it right.

The trouble is that the average boss only knows how to criticise. They don't know how to recognise.

When was the last time (apart from your annual appraisal) (and maybe not even then) that your direct boss told you that you were doing a good job ?

So, in your presentation, talk about good examples, rules and procedures but also talk about recognising those who get it right.

Merv

Actually, same question ; when did you last tell your kids that they were being good ?

Deep stuff for a Saturday afternoon Merv.

Its now a wait and see if I am offered the position.
