I will stick my neck on the block.

NEBOSH Diploma

Basically with the Diploma you are given course material to study. You then complete several assignments. When I did it we had to complete 10 assignments. You will also have to sit exams. When I did Dip 1 & 2 you had to sit 4 exams. It is slightly different now with the new Diploma. I'm not sure how many assignments or exams you have to do, but the NEBOSH Certificate, Dip 1 & 2 took nearly 2.5 years to complete studying part time.

NVQ Level 4

I did not take this route, but have got NVQ's in other subjects. This route is quite easy providing your already in a Health and Safety position. Basically all you have to do is provide evidence of competence. I know a few people who chose this route after struggling with the Diploma and they managed to complete this in 6 months.

There are pro's and cons with both of them. Everyone that did the NEBOSH will say that is the best and all the one's who took the NVQ route will say that is the best. You have to decide what is best for you. Take into consideration how much time you have got and cost.

The most recognised is the NEBOSH Diploma and most of the job adverts ask for this.

In my view, you should also include in the mix post graduate diplomas etc from universities.

Even though many of these are considered equivalent there is still the issue of the perception of the employer (or potential employer) to consider.

As a rule of thumb in most cases I would say a post graduate diploma is often considered higher than a NEBOSH diploma which is often considered higher than an NVQ - even though they are supposedly equivalent

I did the nvq a number of years ago, I Completed it in less than 6 months but only because I had been carrying out the Health and Safety Managers job for a few years prior to undertaking the nvq, I am also an assessor and a verifier of nvq`s. I think the choice has got to be up to the individual,if you are doing the job already then it would be an easier option to take the nvq, but if you are not then I have read of a lot of people who have found the nvq very difficult.

Gareth

Bob,

I totally agree with you, the idea of showing past evidence would show your experience and the exams and the assignments would show up to date competance !!

I had to decide which route i was going to take and had to weigh up the options. Firstly i am in a new position and starting a lot from scratch and i feel the diploma would interfere with what i am trying to achieve her, secondly the cost weighed up with the poor pass rate would not have gone down too well.

I felt the NVQ 4 would not only prove my competency over the term but also help me in my job when putting systems in place. That's why i choose the NVQ route.

I have spoken to quite a few people competent in their Health and Safety positions who have taken the NVQ route and been warned its not an easy route so please don't listen to those who belittle it. Yes it can take as little as 6 months to complete but boy have you got to have a lot of evidence in place for that.

Weigh up whats best for you and good luck in which ever you choose but research the providers.

Dave
