Hi,

A team leader has just informed me that he is taking his team to Alton Towers next week (in work time) where they may have a glass or two of something stronger than lemonade.

Apart from the standard 'behave yourself' disclaimer, what risk assessments do I need to perform? And what about insurance?

Any advice gratefully received.

Talk to your insurers first to make sure that they are happy to cover this away from work / in work time activity.

Also tell them about the proposed intention to have a sherbet dab or two - then find out how the team is getting there and who are nominated drivers or are they using coach or private hire vehicles?

Use information received to allow / block the activity, then if allowed , ask the team leader in charge to go through the day with you to help with assessing the risks to persons and possible hazards that would be encountered.

If the resultant assessment shows a high risk factor for whatever reason, give it to senior managers or directors to give permission or reject the trip.

It's not up to you to stop them, merely to point out in a completed written document to your highest level of management any dangers or legally based problems that could affect your firm or insurances.

They must still approve the trip willingly, and from a well informed basis.

PS - make sure that the risk assessment is done on the Alton Towers site - then you get the freebie as well !!

If they are going to have a drink, make sure it is AFTER the rides...

Personally, I would approach this with the attitude that "this trip is going to take place, there will be risks involved, how can we minimise the likelihood of them being realised to an acceptable level to the business".

All this approach of 'banning' or 'not allowing' stuff gives us a bad name and will certainly do you no favours when you need same persons to assist you later with another H&S matter.

(PS I am not suggesting that is your approach of course).

I a team leader is taking his team then it is up to him to do the assessment. As a safety professional your role is provide advise and support, not do it for him

As a starting point Alton Towers produce a safety information leaflet (aimed at school visits but still applicable)

Given that the legal requirement is to record significant risks I wouldn't have thought there was that many to consider. Transport, health conditions before going on the rides and not drinking to excess are the main ones. (and don't forget to include a procedure for what happens if they get separated from the rest of their group :-)

Thank you for your responses - very helpful - I now feel quite confident that I can advise the team leader of his duties.

I also contacted Alton Towers directly and they sent me a copy of their public liability certificate and a H&S information sheet for Education Establishments/ Groups.
