Morning
An RPS is appointed internally by your organisation, they would require training with regard to the relevant regulations (Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999), this will consist of a 2 - 4 day course dependant upon provider.
Duties may include, audits of the system, taking radiation readings, analysis of the readings to ensure exposure levels are not exceeded, providing safe systems of work (also known as local rules), providing training in the use of meters, arranging for meter calibration, involvement in the risk assessment process, obtaining the appropriate authorisation from the local authoritie or EA, etc. They are the local day to day contact, and their details (copy of certificate, contact details both during work hours and outside work hours would need to be displayed in a suitable location (H&S noticeboard etc) for use in the event of an incident involving the source/s.
An RPA can also be appointed by your organisation, however the majority of organisations appoint an external consultant in this role, several reasons for this, such as independent view of the management system in place, wider exposure (wrong word considering the subject) to other industries and practices thereby able to provide suitable guidance and advice, carry out the risk assessment process etc. Their contact details, the same as the RPS would need to be displayed for the same reasons.
The above is assuming that you are based within the UK.
If you contact me off forum, I can provide you with details of a training provider within the UK.
