Can I suggest you look at the HSE website.

This is a useful link that tells you the competence scriteria for the Radiation Protection Adviser: http://www.hse.gov.uk/ra...ion/ionising/rpa/rpa.htm

Radiation Protection Supervisers are an internal appointment within your organisation. There are courses that you can send them on - four days or thereabouts. They do need to keep up-to-date of course.

Can I suggest that you look at the HSE website? It is quite helpful.

This is the link to the page that describes the competence criteria for the Radiation Protection Adviser: http://www.hse.gov.uk/ra...ion/ionising/rpa/rpa.htm

Radiation Protection Superviser(s) are appointed from within your organisation. There are courses they can go on, of order four days. After that they have to keep up-to-date, but I am not aware of any prescribed way in which they should do this.

Morning

An RPS is appointed internally by your organisation, they would require training with regard to the relevant regulations (Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999), this will consist of a 2 - 4 day course dependant upon provider.
Duties may include, audits of the system, taking radiation readings, analysis of the readings to ensure exposure levels are not exceeded, providing safe systems of work (also known as local rules), providing training in the use of meters, arranging for meter calibration, involvement in the risk assessment process, obtaining the appropriate authorisation from the local authoritie or EA, etc. They are the local day to day contact, and their details (copy of certificate, contact details both during work hours and outside work hours would need to be displayed in a suitable location (H&S noticeboard etc) for use in the event of an incident involving the source/s.

An RPA can also be appointed by your organisation, however the majority of organisations appoint an external consultant in this role, several reasons for this, such as independent view of the management system in place, wider exposure (wrong word considering the subject) to other industries and practices thereby able to provide suitable guidance and advice, carry out the risk assessment process etc. Their contact details, the same as the RPS would need to be displayed for the same reasons.

The above is assuming that you are based within the UK.

If you contact me off forum, I can provide you with details of a training provider within the UK.

ICI Tracerco carry out an excellent training course for the position of RPS, after which your own company manager would draft a letter of authorisation to allow you to fulfill the roll. We do our refresher training ona two yearly basis. This is for offshore oil and gas industry but the regulations apply to both offshore as well as onshore industries.

Go to
www.hpa.org.uk/radiation

The Health Protection Agency, which was the Radiological Protection Board. They do an excellent 3 day course for RPS's. They are also the enforcing authority for radioactive sources
