Posted By dangermouse We occasionally use slings and chains to move machinery around, a few times a year. I have sent the men who occasionaly use lifting slings and chains on a course, they were impressed and pleased, now we are wondering if when they check the gear before lifting we should recorded the check? I think they should but is that OTT? I d like your views please, also does anyone have a template of what a check sheet might look? and is there a method statement or safe working pracice somewhere i could look at? this must be fairly standard. oh and could you be less harsh than usual with your comments please...sometimes you lot can be very judgemental when us newbies are just trying to do a good job (I am joking!!....kind of!) thank you in anticipation of kind comments!

Posted By ian milne Hi,
Yes, you should document your checks if only as proof that it appeared safe at the time (evidence if something goes wrong and to encourage your team to do these checks)
Check the HSE website for their guidance notes to develop a checklist i.e. tears, age, serial number, chemical damage etc. Also, the training provider should of given your guys some documented information on what to look for.

Posted By Dan Malone Here in Ireland checks are required and a record maintained. Check out http://www.hsa.ie/files/...construction%20forms.pdfThis has all form used in Ireland for construction. On the over leaf of each page is the direction and review interval required. The CR6A is used to confirm checks every 6 months. Make sure you note any slings and chains that are destroyed and the date and by who. Hope this helps Dan Malone

Posted By CRT Hi,
I assume you are aware of the requirement for a thorough examination under the lifting operations and lifting equipment Regulations 1998; accessory for lifting every 6 months.
