Posted By John Doe Hi all, anyone familiar with the need to evacuate workers in the building where a crane is lifting plant onto the roof. HSE's 'lifting' pages don't seem to go into enough detail. I guess the workers on the floor immediately below the roof need to be away from the area during the operation. What about those on lower floors? Cheers in advance

Posted By John Doe No takers? I'd settle for a pointer in the right direction, folks. Maybe a guidance doc reference?

Posted By alex mccreadie LOLER REGULATION 8(1)C Working under Suspended loads. As stated this should be avoided but if necessity means workers must carry on then a safe system of work must be put in place. Brief but I hope it helps. Worth buying a copy of LOLER from HSE books only £8.00.

Posted By John Doe Cheers, Alex. Maybe a bit more background would be useful to you all. We're putting plant onto the roof of an occupied workplace building (3 floors). Do we need to clear all areas on each floor below the area of roof to be loaded?

Posted By Alan Hoskins What type of construction is the roof? How far above the roof is the load likely to be lifted before installation? Can the roof sustain an impact from that height if the load drops or overturns? Presumably the roof can support the load once installed... A

Posted By Renny Thomson The lifting operation should be planned and supervised by a comptent person. They should make the decision based on their competent assessment of the risk. This assessment should consider a number of factors including the load, surroundings/environment etc. If you are the person responsible John Doe, are you competent? If not, has a competent person been appointed to plan and control the lifting operation?

Posted By John Doe Thanks all. No, I'm far from competent but a question was asked by the Project Manager. I think he just wanted to check this point in advance of the contractor's presentation of a risk assessment and method statement. From your responses, I'm guessing it's not a standard control measures and depends purely on the findings of the assessment. That's good enough for me, folks. Thanks
