Mornin' All,
This isn't about "don't work in a dusty environment" but a question about if you have to wear a dust mask (with a proper face seal and replaceable filters) is there a limit to how long that mask can be worn before the heart/lungs become stressed? Obviously the work rate, temperature, humidity would also be a factor but is there a rule of thumb or better still a set of tables that can be used to establish a work/rest ratio? I suppose the rate at which the filter clogs is pertinent too.
Cheers,
Jim

Workers who are required to wear respiratory protection should have medical approval.

There will be an additional load on the heart and lungs to which some people may be sensitive. This load may increase throughout the working day as fatigue sets in or as the filters clog up.

I used to do (with medical approval) BA set training during which I wore/carried a set for about 6 hours and the trainees wore it for 30-40 minutes (until the air gave out) "up them ladders, down that hole, tote that barge, lift that pole" (pole as in "flag" not as in "-ish")

Could I get medical approval today ? No way. Even if I wanted to.

Could you do the physical part today, even without BA?

Chris,

yeah. I still do the training, up to 8 hours a day, but I get a stunt double to do the heavy stuff.
