Is anyone aware of any legislation that prevents the reduction in length of wooden pole ladders by cutting them? i have looked at BS1129 and cannot find anything in black and white.

Your views please.

There is probably no legislation that prohibits this, but I would suggest that it bad practise. I'll bet that you will have difficulty getting a ladder manufacturere saying its acceptable.

Best not to do it.

My opinion.. and only an opinion.. You are altering a piece of equipment that was designed for to be used as is. To alter the footprint of the ladder may compromise the ladders integrity.. the cut end grain could suck up water, or split under use. Not to mention that you could end up cutting one side shorter than the other. If an accident subsequently occurs then you've left yourselves open for a fall (pun not intended).

Cutting ladders.. not a good idea methinks.

I agree - anyway dont ladders still have the steel wire inserted into the stiles ( or have let some developments pass by me)

If they do - then to cut the wire is a defenite no no. Mind you even if it isnt present, I wouldnt cut one.
