Posted By KEVIN O'KANE Having a pint with a mate last night, he works in the facilities environment as a contractor. He was telling me that a lot of facilities manager have the management of elf & safety as part of their remit. My question is has anyone made the transition from safety into the broader arena of facilities...and what are the pros and cons ?And would they recommend it...thanks in advance kevin

I didn't enjoy it & have gone back to just H&S.
The problem was, once the H&S systems were in place and the managers were trained, the job became 95%+ facilities. I just felt that I was wasting away and my knowledge was deminishing through lack of use.
But that's just my experience - I'm sure other people think differently.
What I will say though, as part of my leaving interview, the role was discussed and it's now going to be a Facilities role with a good working knowledge of H&S, so whoever takes the role on should know what they are coming in to.

it really depends to what extent you mean FM, do you include technical services or soft services or both?
TS is a very different beast to Soft Services, enjoyable environment to work in plenty of experience in all fields

Posted By CFT I do tend to use the facilities role in with H&S for reasons including; whilst assessing contractors capabilities from that H&S point of view I can also decide if the actual work they are proposing is right for the company. In addition looking after fire related issues, the premises within the group, transportation etc etc the role is just about right for us.
There are not a plethora of companies that can afford to have a dedicated H&S officer/Manager/Director on the books and as so often happens environmental standards, quality, and technical gets passed over. In all seriousness I tend to think in the majority of cases it is a positive appointment to include certain aspects of facilities even if not all.

I was a facilities manager and the company I was with wanted to expand this meant that they required a person to do Client Representative and sponsored me to take my diploma. Our clients were also demanding H&S input to tender documentation so I was asked to go full time safety and have the facilities department operating under my Supervision. When Changes in the senior managers structure came the newly appointed Engineering Manager took the department under his control, he considered Safety people slowed things down. I felt it was time to go and so started my third career. However I do consider that my facilities background helped a great deal
