Vehicle / Pedestrian Seperation requirements

We are assembling a new warehouse for a customer and have installed doors for pedestrians and separate ones for the movement of forklifts.
Customer not happy ( wants a single door for the lot )and requires documented evidence to substantiate the requirement for two doors.
Before commencing my root through web sites and the blue books, any pointers to help me raise proof that we are online with best practise would be appreciated

Hi Garry,
Its a basic recommendation in the Workplace regs that vehicles and pedestrians should allow vehicles and pedestrians to circulate 'safely'; separating them is the best way to achieve this. HSE have loads of stuff about workplace transport on their site, including some Flash animations of before and after scenarios,

I would suggest that the basic requierements of Reg 17 of Workplace regs for segregation of vehicles and pedestrians would be useful.
Whilst you are on you might try and set up pedestrian routes and handrail segregation as additional requirements.
Slightly different but releveant prosecution of Homebargains in this months SHP to reference as wll.

There are some adverts occasionally in SHP for "plastic" safety barriers between pedestrians and FLTs.
These look brilliant to me and I am recommending them to all my clients.
There is also a film/video from (cant remember)(help !) (outakes ?) which shows good ways of separating pedestrians from truckies.
But the usual arrangement is a big door for the truckies and a small door for the pedestrians. With left/right separation for the truckies.
Merv
Anyone : how many "bent" curtain doors have you seen ?

Hi,
The Approved Code of Practice for the Workplace regs and probably the Workplace Transport guidance document. The best quote though is para 226(c) of the "Health and Safety in Retail and Wholesale Warehouses" document HSG 76 It says exactly what you w
want....
"226 Separate specific routes should be provided for
pedestrians. Routes should include, where
appropriate:
(a) designated and clearly marked crossing places;
(b) suitable barriers or guardrails at entrances to
and exits from buildings;
(c) a separate route for pedestrians, so far as is reasonably practicable, where vehicles passthrough doorways see (Figure 30); all such
doorways should be provided with vision panels
and be clearly and conspicuously marked with
the safe clearance height.
hope this helps

I think that the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 17 should be sufficient in terms of a reference, particularly in light of CDM 07 which places a duty on the Client and the Designer to ensure that the facilities comply.
In the ACOP, para 173 states that, "In doorways, gateways ... vehicles should be separated from pedestrians by a kerb or barrier. Where necessary, for safety, separate routes through should be provided ..."
Is that good enough?
