Posted By Robert S Woods One of our employees is parking his bike outside a fire exit door (it can still be opened).
We would like to hatch off an area in front of the door where he cannot park. Is there a legal requirement for the size of this area ?

Posted By holmezy Rob,
as far as I am aware it can be as small or as large as you like, provided that the "clear" area allows the door to open fully and there is ample room for people to exit the building, (usually in a straight line)safely and quickly without having an obstacle course to complete. So it could be 2m x 2m ish or football pitch size! Your choice.

Posted By Merv Newman No. No legal requirement. (we are not in a "nanny state" are we ?)
Follow Holmzy's advice and do the same thing inside and around fire extinguishers, eye-washes, showers, fire hoses and first-aid kits.
You can also do it around the boss's office door (no deliberate tripping hazards, please)
I use(d) yellow and black tiger tape. And threatened to eat violators.
Worked for me
Note : offending bicycles (including/especially those with "go faster" stickers) can be clamped.

I've relented and allowed the "go faster" stripes, its the tassles that hang off the handle bars that annoy me. Forget clamping, just crush them.
Oh, and those clicky clacky things that they put on the spokes...sackable offence in my book!

Posted By Robert K Lewis Have you tried the wet cycle gear stored in the toilets as there are no places to dry them? Quite odorific some days, and some do not shower before they put on their work clothes.
Seriously though I always try to make the hatched area at least one metre wide and run through to the vehicle route such that nothing is ever parked directly in front of the doorway.

Posted By Robert S Woods Thanks for the advice.
It tallies with what I thought (always better to check, cover your *).
The Bike does not have tassles or a clickerty clackerty thing. It does however only have one peddle (honest). The owner stands on the other and freewheels downhill to work and pushes it back. When I asked him why??? He said he was always in a rush in a morning and he didn't want to be late getting to work. As for pushing it home at night: there was no rush to get there and the extra effort it took to push the bike was worth the convenience in the morning.
I meant why not get another peddle but didn't have the heart to persue the question.
