It has been brought to my attention that several of our sewerage workers are not vaccinated, can somebody with expert knowledge advise what should be standard vaccinations for this type of work. ASAP please.
I am assuming we have legal responsibility to carry this out? Either way I want it done.

Homer,
as far as I can remember, you ought to implement controls for the following;
Hep A,B,C, and D
Leptospirosis
tetanus.
There are vaccines for Hep A+B but not for C or D, (although I think vaccine for B gives some protection to D?)
Not too sure if theres any vaccine for Lepto, but an awareness program should be given. Also some companies provide employees with a card that informs gp's, medics etc that they work in an environment where they may come into contact with rats urine.
Most people have a tetanus jab. Lat I heard was that if you've had 4 in your lifetime you shouldn't need any more and are covered, but check with a medical person.
Follow this link to HSE guidance page http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg198.htm
Can't remeber anymore, its Friday and I'm on shut down mode.

Sorry to be a pedant but you need to do a risk assessment - this could be dealt with as a COSHH issue.
Get some advice from EMAS and also follow the excellent. HSE guidance http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/seweindx.htm

When I used to work for a water company in the past, the standard vaccinations were Hep A, polio and tetanus. The decision does come down to risk assessment but if you look at when and how Hep B can be contracted, the risks are very low as I believe they involve transfer in fresh bodily fluids.
As for Leptospirosis, there's no vaccination. With all of the above, the main control is good hygiene practice and making sure everyone's aware of hazards involved. We used to issue a standard letter for employees to pass to their GP and provide an information card for them to keep in their wallets.
Finally, vaccinations can only be advised and not insisted on (in my opinion) as its their own bodies and they may have views about being innoculated. Think about how your going to finance any vaccinations; usually the GP is happy to do it free but we did have to pay some.
Hope that helps

If you are working with sewage then you must be working for/with a waste utility company, they will probably have standard risk assessments and guidance. I suggest you ask them, however from my knowledge of the industry the above post described it well
