Is there a max recommended height for stacking stillages?

Hi All,
question says it all really!
Is anyone aware of a recommended maximum number of (empty) metal stillages being stacked on top of each other please? The ones we have are about a metre high and we have some on site stacked up to 5 high but I feel that is too much and I am looking for guidelines/industry standards as evidence to back me up.
Any information would be much appreciated
Kind Regards
Booney

Hi Booney
If the stillages are square with a uniform foot print, have the cup type locating feet for stacking, are not damaged and the storage area is flat. Then there should be no problem.

I used to do a lot of work with this type of product and there are a number of factors to take into account.
1) The footprint of the stillage - minimum dimension. It's a bit like the stability of scaffolding - the narrower the stillage the more unstable the stack - in some case we limited some stillages to 2 high.
2) as other respondant has pointed out - how level is the ground
3) also how good are the base frame and feet - if seperate feet then chance are one of the base will be uneven and lead to wobbling. Sometimes these stillages have wheels which can affect stability
4) how well does the stck interlock - if stillages within the stack can wobble they will and what do weebles do when they wobble - well stillages do the opposite......
5) location in stacks - if you have a lot of stacksyou may be able to argue that each stack supports each other so stacks can go higher but if stacks touch each other there wil be problems when lifting stillages out.
My personal opinion is that I would not go above a stack of 3m high

Hi Booney
I would suggest you ask the supplier what they do and what standard they work to, they may be able to help you.

Blimey, are you guys nocturnal? I looked at the times you posted replies...
Many thanks for the responses and to clarify a little: the stillages we have vary quite a bit, smallest are about a metre square with a uniform foot print, largest are about 2m wide/1.7m high but all have cup feet. They are stored outside on concrete in a dedicated area that is perfectly flat. Storage area is located to an inner access road that is not particularly busy but does take some pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
We have had a set of three large stillages go over in some very high winds so these are now stacked to a max of two but it's the smaller stillages that concern me.
Many thanks for the replies
Kind Regards
Booney

I don't like stacks that go above my head height. ie a layer that starts above the 2m level.
That is not very clear is it ? You can stack two 1m50 pallets up as the second one starts at about my chest level.
You can't stack three 1m pallets up as the top one starts above my head.
