Posted By Steve Cartwright Do you mean Fire Warden? If you mean Fire Warden it will depend on what training they have had. If they have been trained in the safe use of fire extinguishers they may have a go at putting out very small fires. Operating instructions are printed on each fire extinguisher. Usually though they just have to make sure that all the people in the area they are responsible for are evacuated. They may also do a role call and then report to their line manager. Never come accross a fire watcher. Steve

Posted By Paul Oliver On my current project we have employees who sole duty is to carry out fire watch duties. This is due to the fact that hot work activites are being carried out within the confines of an operational gas storage facility. The fire watch operative must: Ensure that a hot work permit has been issued prior to work commencing. Maintain a watch on any portable generating equipment whilst it is in use. Be in possesion of a gas monitor and alert all local personnel in the event of any gas detection alarms. Ensure a fully charged 9kg dry powder extinguihser is readily availalbe for use. Ensure combustion equipment is swithed off at the end of each shift. Ensure any drains close to the work area are covered. Ensure the work area is kept free from combustible material. Hope this helps Paul

Posted By garyh I assume that this is the same as a "standbyman" who watches during hot work eg welding etc. I endorse the above comment and would add that usually they have a role in raising the alarm if anything beyond a small fire occurs. They are usually given a radio or similar. I always made them "in charge" in the same way as the standbyman on confined space entry is - acting as the safety guardian and eyes and ears of everyone on the job. They should of course be trained and competent etc.
