I have recently passed my NEBOSH cert and I have also been on the IOSH 4 day course, and my employer wants me to carry out an inspection of a school woodworking workshop, I am confident that I could carry out this task, but are my qualifications suitable?

'Competence' is the main factor and academic qualifications are only a part of the 'competence' triangle

Ask: What do I really know about woodworking shops and the 'going's-on' therein? irrespective of my academic qualifications

Remembering that transferring skills / experience etc of an engineering workshop and the like can help you

If the answer is 'not much' then you need to question your 'competence' as against your qualifications

I have worked on nuclear safety cases with doctors of science who had more PhD's than most people have had hot dinners but many were not 'competent' as they had no expetience etc

best of luck

There is a better than average chance that there is an experienced wood working supervisor / teacher in charge.

Your job, which you are competent for, is to head a team of people doing the RA.

Even if it is just you and one other, the other can be the one bringing the experience in wood working machinery that you are looking for. Combine that with a review of the various publications (see HSE website search engine) you should be on the right track.

Do NOT be told that you have the exam so you must do the RA. It has to be a combined effort (they will also know what students tend to get wrong).

Hope that helps.
