Afternoon all,

There has been much debate over recent times concerning the topic of fire safety, risk assessment and competence.

In connection with this subject, should those carrying out these assessments hold membership of an organisation involved/specialising in areas of fire safety e.g. (IFE) and whereby the competency and moreover the continuing professional development of individuals can be validated by the current and overall level of that membership?

Regards

D

Always I debate that I seem to get involved in. I have expressed my views many times on here so I won't say too much this time. I will say that those who are selling their services should be competent in what they do and must be able to prove their competency. I do not belong to any organisation and yet I did carry out many fire risk assessments. Not so many anymore.

If you are asking 'does anyone who undertakes a fire risk assessment have to be a member of this or that organisation etc' then I think the answer is no. They just must have a clear understanding of what they are undertaking and know what to include in a report to make sure it is suitable and sufficient.. It is not like undertaking a DSE assessment or working at height. Fire does not confine itself to one compartment, once it starts it grows therefore increasing the risk with time, it affetcs all people in a building not just one or two. It is unlike most other H&S risks hence a different set of legislation.

I don't believe that being a member of the IFE (or other such organisation) would necessarily make you good at fire risk assessments!

Geoff,
I did not make reference to membership resulting in good risk assessment but rather as a means of demonstrating competency in the area of fire safety.

It would be interesting to see the reaction or comments if the question had been asked in connection with the demonstration of competency, CPD and membership of IOSH or other similar organisation.
