Posted By Chris Ivan Hi The CEO of a prospect of mine in shipping in the south east wants a presentation on behavioural safety -my issue is that the company has other pressing risk concerns, and should be performing compliance reviews initially to address issues. I need to arrange a presentation and wonder if there are interested parties based in the south east that can contact me and advise the best way forwards or attend in early july -I've told him that he should work on compliance first before aiming higher, but his CEO seems keen to hear the big picture first. Anybody has experience of this situation and how to respond to client? Independent consultants only please! Best regards and thanks! Chris

Posted By Paul Duell An organisation I used to work for implemented a BS programme a few years ago.
Personal opinion only - but behavioural safety is at best absolutely pointless - and at worst, it's harmful - if you haven't already got everything else in place. BS depends - among other things - on the "no blame culture" so that people feel free to have open discussions about why they behave unsafely. If parts of the H&S strategy still depend on discipline and enforcement, you're going to be sending contrary messages.
I'd be pleased to be proved wrong on this - I'm always prepared to learn - but my experience with that programme was that BS works best once all the other measures have reduced accidents as far as they can.

Your story understandably indicates that you see many 'sides' to the story. At the same time, the 'either/or' response you talk in terms of may fail to do justice to either you or your client.
As a chartered occupational psychologist and a CMIOSH, I have relevant experience and may be able to help. You are welcome to phone me on 020 8654 0808 for an initial brief exploration.

Posted By Farmer Behaviuoral safety will work if the organisation is ready for it -- your concern about getting the basics in place first is right -- If the company are serious about this excercise a pre assessment of safety climate is advised to give a picture of the safety concerns and possible barriers to success
This is the area that may be a compromise with the CEO as the assessment if done by a proper behavioural safety company will show whether the company has the right managerial and employee attitudes and values to ensure its success -- judging by your comments the gut feel is that it is not and the excercise may prove useful in identifying the true underlyimg issues in safety management compliance

Posted By Yvonne Bennett Hi Chris
Despite your concerns, it is refreshing that a CEO would like to look at the 'bigger picture'. Our ogranisation has been successfully implementing culture change programmes with international organisations encompassing 'behaviours' since 1996. The vehicle for these Programmes is Health & Safety, but with a knock on effect into Quality, business continuity and other related areas. +people is a measurable, sustainable Programme based on a mix of NLP, Work-based psychology and related measurable sciences, delivered in a coaching format. I would be delighted to offer a further insight and provide case studies.
