Posted By artisdeeian Hello everyone. Is it possible (without going into much detail)that someone can give me an idea of what an environmental noise survey would cost my company. It would entail a time period of approximately 10 hours, from 6.00am up to 4.00pm at three monitoring points. We have had complaints from a couple of local residents about noise from some of our machinery. Has anyone had one done recently or can give me an idea of the cost.
Regards Ian.

Posted By Barry Cooper Ian Between £700-1000 in Lancashire. The first survey may cost more than the following surveys. Background noise levels will need to be established when the plant is not operational. Try Industrial Noise and Vibration Centre, I have found them to be excellent, and very good at coming up with solutions to reduce noise at source. Whoever does it make sure they do the survey during fine weather, as heavy rain and/or high winds can give false readings

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Can I add something? If the noise is so high that the people living near the site are complaining enough for you to have an independent noise survey done, what about your workforce? Do you they complain about the noise or are they equipped with the necessary protection? If they are then fine carryout the enquiry, if not and they doin't legally need the PPE then why are you doing the noise survey? May I suggest you check the background noise level at source before you get a distant one done, if you need to apply protection for your employees then there may be a need to carry out distant surveys. Get your employee's protected right first that's your most pressing need.

Posted By Dave Wilson I think it should be to BS4140 (I think or is it 4120) rating of industrial noise will tell you the likelhood of suffering complaints.
get in touch with your LA EH Dept they can advise

Posted By artisdeeian Hi everyone. Thanks for your responses. Can I just reply to Bob Shilabeer regarding the environmental survey. Bob I have carried out the 'Industrial' Noise assessment and this is Ok with the technical control measures installed. as you know environmentalk is different alltogether. This is the first complaint we have had in 20 - 30 years of operation. the machines are new and as I said control measures are installed. I think it may be a 'bear with a sore head' syndrome. However, all I am doing is preparing myself for the local authorities to act. Thanks once again.

Posted By John Middleton The BS you are looking for is BS4142;Method for rating industrial noise affecting mixed residential and industrial areas.
This gives details on how to assess noise levels produced by industry and background noise levels.
However, if you followed the standard and did it yourself, it would cost a lot in instrument hire and time, would not have the power in court of a survey done by a competent person and you may not get the correct result.

Posted By Dave Wilson I knew there was some 1, 2 and 4 in there.
I feel you may be venturing into the realms of 'Nuisance' (EP Act)which can either be private or statutory nusiance. This is enforced by the LA EH Dept or a civil case can be started by an individual.
Remember Nuisance has little to do with the 'Actual Level of the Noise'(it may be relevant) but generally what effect this noise may have on the community or individuals as what may affect one person may not affect another.
Background noise masks perceived noise and appears louder when this background disappears.
very general comments here
