Have a good look through the ACoP to CDM 2007, particulary appendix 5.
good luck if you decide to continue with it.

Posted By Mal Shiels Hi Mick, in response to your query, yes they are user friendly (but i would say that as i am Chairman of the Northern Region of the APS), and getting up to speed depends upon your level of competence.
To get an idea, check out appendix 4 and 5 of the ACOP and see where you stand. Fell free to contact me if you want to discuss the APS further.
In terms of templates, CDM2007 only requires 3 documents to be produced, F10 Notification, Construction phase health and safety plan, and Health and safety file.
Template for F10 is on HSE website, principal contractor will produce construction phase plan, and health and safety file will be guided by the nature and complexity of the project (see page 62 and 63 of ACOP)
You could also look on the citb website and new links to industry led and produced CDM guidance.
Regards, Mal
