Hello everyone,

My company act as Project Supervisor Design Process for projects in Ireland.

In order to complete our legal obligations we need the signature of the client on our formal appoinment form.

One particular client has shown a lot of sceptisism over the costs of H&S vs the benefits these will have on the overall project not to mention fulfilling legal obligations.

Are there any hard hitting facts or examples of safety proving to be highly beneficial, cost effective or even profitable?

Could I suggest that a building that has been managed so as to be as safe as possible for the user could be more attractive to a potential buyer.

In this case I'm refering to offices and industrial units.

Thank you.

With some clients you can forget the usual arguments for reducing accidents such as the moral case, protecting your workforce and others; less down time, fewer wasted materials and damge to plant; lower insurance costs etc. Press the two big selfish buttons: 'cost of fines' and 'stay out of jail' backed up with stories clipped from SHP court section with details of employers being hit with large fines and banged up at Her Majesty's pleaure. It usually gives them pause for thought.

I fine more and more that the cost of an accident, fines etc. etc. tend to fall on deaf ears because they are so used to hearing it. One angle that often works is the damage to a companies reputation, most organisations hate bad PR.
