Hi,

Our Company is located in Saudi Arabia, and is looking to gain accrediation for OHSAS 18001 by year end..... so what not a problem in theory!

My questions are, we intend to use a UK based Auditor to carry out these audits to ascertain suitability (eg. BSI / Lloyds etc) -

1. Are they competent to carry out the audit (as we use Saudi Legislation & Gulf Standards although use UK Standards as best practice in many situations)? Surely an auditor should be able to display a level of competence with the host countries legislation etc etc.....

2. Should we carry out a Contractor Assessment on them prior to approving the contract for them to Audit, checking their credentials, competencies as per contractor management?

This really depends on the audit company you will be using - Many have multi national capability. If you email me we could talk offline about this if you wish.

Hi Richie

The OHSAS 18001 has only recently been offered as an accredited standard. If you choose a UKAS accredited certification body you should be ok as they have strict rules to comply with. UKAS is auditing them regularly. All CB's must prove their auditors are competent to perform audits in a given country and industry. Obviously you can perform an extra check and ask for the CV of your auditor.

Let me know if you need more help with that. I worked for a certification body and was Project Manager for OHSAS accreditation.

Richie,

reverse order :

First, yes, you should do an accreditation of your auditors.

Second, they do not need a detailed knowledge of local legislation. They only need to confirm that you have that knowledge.
