Posted By Mike B On our site we have a large underground bunker which is a designated confined space. It is about 4 metres beneath ground level and is only accessible by a series of step irons which makes access and egress rather slow and risky. Obviously, access is under strict permit to work procedures: confined space training, top man, rescue plan, full breathing apparatus, trained climbers etc. I am considering designating this area a general smoking area and allowing all staff to use this facility for smoking; since the confined spaces team will have breathing apparatus on, they will not be affected by the smoke of others. The problem is that the general smokers are office staff etc. and are not confined space trained so I am considering having our confined spaces team stationed in the bunker in case any of the smokers get into difficulties. Further to this one of the confined space team is a smoker himself and states that his human rights are affected since he will not be able to smoke whilst in the bunker because of his BA mask. Could anyone tell me of any suppliers who make a breathing apparatus mask with a cigarette adaptor so that the operative does not have to take his mask off and break our strict confined spaces procedures?

Posted By DRB I don't know of any suppliers who could provide what you need but how about drilling a small hole in the front of his mask. This could allow the cigarette to poke through the mask. Obviously you would need to ensure that the atmosphere isn't explosive but other than that it should work just fine.

Posted By Phil A simpler method would be to hold a lit cigarette next to the air intake of the compressor that fills your cylinders. Nicotine at 223 bar should mitigate his human right issues

Posted By holmezy Mike, once again we see a regulation brought in with all good intentions, that does not effectively solve the problem but drives it underground. Cant fault you for initiative though. Holmezy

Posted By Bennie Wonderful idea - but you need to take into account the 50% wall area. This would be a breach of the legislation. However, a way out of this and to save drilling holes in the front of the mask would be to put the non smokers into the confined space during smoke breaks. Then let the smokers smoke everywhere else. That way you are complying with the law by preventing exposure of non smokers to smoke fumes. Go for it lol
