is this a flood receiving pond or an ornamental pond?
If a temporary flood relief pond the considerations for wildlife are somewhat different to those of an established pond.
If an established pond (even man-made) it may well have been colonised by wildlife, flora and fauna - some of which could be protected species.

Beware the crested newt, slowworm, toad, nesting birds, adders, orchids, burrowing bees, etc.

HSE has some guidance on slurry lagoons - a long way form your situation but will provide good practice - go to HSE website - look at agriculture in the main list and here is stuff there. Again good old risk assessment comes in here - who can forseeabley have access? Visitors, tresspassers? Lifebelts required? Etc
