Posted By Elaine McDonald A bit of advice please. We are based in a ground floor office, with two designated fire escape routes. One of these routes is also our entrance route into our reception area, which is used by visitors including members of the public (both routes take employees/visitors straight out to fresh air in the evernt of an evacuation). There is one other exit out of the office, which is used only by staff, but does take you back into the main building's reception before leading you outside. It is my opinion that the exit for staff cannot be used for emergency evacuation as does not directly lead employees/visitors into fresh air. Can someone please clarify if I am correct in my thinking? As there has been suggestions that the reception door be locked during working hours, which I have raised my objections due to the above. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Posted By holmezy Elaine, it is acceptable to have a fire exit that does not lead directly to the outside of the building. As long as the escape route is clearly marked and it is a direct, or as direct as possible, route to safety it should be OK. There are lots of places that lock reception areas to prevent access etc. If, however, the reception door is a designated fire escape, then this must be open, or able to be easily opened, ie crash bar or one way lock etc whilst folks are in the building. If in doubt then ask your local Brigade. Holmezy
