Posted By Joel Benham I searched the forums on this topic before deciding to post this thread. Not much came up, so here hoping... I work for a local authority that is reviewing the layout of its One Stop area. The managers are keen to find out if wider reception desks have been proven to limit violence. I'd be interested to hear members' views about whether higher and wider reception desks work. Also, is there a minimum "best practice" standard for reception desks in terms of height and width? The idea of screens is probably a non-starter as it will go against the Council's ethos of customer care, and I am aware that sometimes screens can increase customer frustration and cause violence. I appreciate that there would need to be other factors in minimising the risks e.g. staff ratios / training/ rehearsed alarm procedures/ good client information where possible, etc. This is about the desks only. Posted By Thomas Kennedy Hi Joel As you say the ethos these days to go for environments that are appear less confrontational and to facilitate acceptable levels of behaviour. I was asked to look into the reception including desk design a year or so ago. Some helpful staff had done their own reasearch printed off details for automatic screens and other defences they wanted installed. Of course we didn't go for any of this. We reduced the risk in other ways - removing cash handling in one case and improving the service and security arrangements in another. I gather you're in an LA in which case I would suggest you make contact with H&S staff at other authorities. A tour and discussion can go along way - LB Merton provided docs to me - the before and after design changes to their refurbished reception area was a useful persuasive tool. I also made use of a few good publications. It gives you a good grounding and discusses the wide range of strategies and solutions that are available. Thomas

Posted By Tabs Please don't forget your duties under DDA though, high desks / deep desks etc can make life hell for those in wheelchairs, zimmer frames, etc.
