Posted By Andy Petrie hi all,
we are looking at introducing a safety award scheme for our contractors to reward good performance.
I want to try and avoid thing like 'lowest incident rate' as I think this could lead to under reporting in order to win the prize.
Has anyone any ideas or experience of using other positive measures as a basis for measuring safety performance?
thanks in advance
Andy

79 hits and not one suggestion! So here goes...
I agree, I don't like incentives based on AFRs etc. Why not something like proactive reporting of unsafe acts or conditions. It would be up to your discretion, but make sure it is a decent prize and well communicated.
Soon you will be flooded with 'em!

Posted By brian mills Andy,
Have you come up with anyway of sorting the tax liability? We Used to have a couple of schemes in place, but the Tax problem has made it difficult.
Regards
Brian

Posted By Carl Currie How about the best Health & Safety suggestion?
The people who are out there day in day out carrying out the tasks could be the people who think of the next best working practice.
A site audit was carried out on a site i visited a couple of months back and they gave a scaffolder who had been working safely a DAB Radio. He was very happy indeed

Posted By Peter Haughey Idea used by B & Q Stores (don't know if it is copyrighted)is to give out cards which state "Gotcha! You were spotted acting in a very safe manner - take this card to your Supervisor to claim one hour off on pay (or a £10 shop voucher)".
I think it is much better to award good acts than punish bad ones; and it may be easier to award them in a random manner, so everyone thinks they are in with a chance...
