Posted By Sean Warburton Hi,
Help me resolve something please safety folk. I am currently rolling out some DSE training. As we know, DSE users are entitled to an eye test under the regs if they are DSE users. My manager has agreed to this, almost. My Manager has said they are not prepared to pay for eye test for people who already wear spectacles, as we will be paying for their glasses and tests even though they have always worn glasses.
My manager is wrong on this, and i have said so. Just to boost my confidence, I'm i right in saying my manager is wrong?
Thanks all
Sean

Yes your manager is wrong!
All users are entitled to an eye test regardless of if they wear glasses or not. However that does not mean they are entitled to glasses, the glasses have to be specifically for DSE use and different to their everyday use.
Regards Brian (a spec wearer)

Your Manager is quite incorrect to make such a blanket statement, Regs are clear (no pun) in so much regular users will be provided with a test and specs to carry out the duties on VDU VED DSE (all the same for the purpose of said regs). If a person is long-sighted or short-sighted and is not used to continual screen use then the distance lenses are not going to be of any use. Also as time goes by sight deteriorates anyway, and as such, they would be fully entitle to a test and specs. Tell him to read the regs and the guidance and stop being so tight.Oh by the way the keystone test whilst useful will not provide the level of health information a proper test will.
One final thought; how can you be certain the persons existing glasses are A. Suitable for continued VDU usage and B. How old are they? (do they meet the level of demand? how can you be certain?
Good luck

Posted By Stephen Bowdler Sean, We use a high street opticians that do books of voucher. The books cost £85 for 5 vouchers and also allow the user to choose a pair of their £30 corrective single vision glasses within the cost of the voucher. This will meet with all your DSE requirements with little effort.
