I know this has come up many times, and in the past I have been guilty...however...

Don't you just love it when youve posted some question or responded to a thread and somebody condescendingly answers:

'why do you ask' (to know the answer perhaps)
'I would have thought that obvious' (if it was that obvious, then they wouldn't have asked)
'surely you should know better' (how do you know, is it your experience or theirs that you are basing your response on?)
'this is basic knowledge you should know' (as last comment, there are all sorts of contributors to these forums and whats basic to one is new ground for another)
'soansos' response is the one I would have given' (oh dear they beat me to it, or I'm just as clever as you, either way, if it adds nothing don't post)
'carry out a risk assessment' (aha, that old chestnut...yes they, I, you, everyones done a risk assessment, just didnt want to clog up the post by telling everybody what I had for breakfast)
'grammatical and spelling mistakes' (if your proofreading the thread, then your obviously not concentrating on the content....and if you have dyslexia, then it doesnt matter what the spellchecker says, you alsways see what you think you see)

I could go on but am starting to get a headache...

Quite frankly, I would prefer those guilty not to post anything...as my grandmother used to say, 'if you cant say anything nice dont say anything at all'

Rant over...I'm going back to occaisionaly reading this forum and very occaisionally responding, ie, when I've got something positive, supportive or helpful to add!

Philby, why do you ask? I would have thought it was obvious that people would use those sorts of reply. Surely you should know better than posting such a query, after all this is basic knowledge you should know. If anyone else had posted a response I'm sure I would have agreed with it.

Oh and by the way, did you carry out a risk assessment before posting this as to the sort of response you might get?

Also, you had some grammatical and spelling mistakes in your posting, which is probably why no one has responded yet because it would take so long to respond and point them out ;}

You've got a headache, what about those of us who have to think up a response. Well I haven't got anything nice to say So I won't say anything at all (well not anything else anyway)

Well actually I lied, I will say something else - the other thing that gets me is the people who respond with blatantly incorrect advice (not always obvious to those who have asked the question because they are the ones who self admit they need a steer on the subject and are looking for some expert comment.

Hopefully no offence taken to this completely flippant response.

Well, I'm not sure if I can add anything to this discussion, other than agreeing with previous respondents (I don't worry too much about grammatical errors, not everyone was as privileged as what I was in taking Latin AND Greek at the grammar school)

But basic knowledge is just that. What we need to know to do the job. Total familiarity with cossh, wah, comah, dse, riddor and so on is a must. If you are not there then you are beneath contempt and incompetent. And we will tell you so.

Isn't that what this site is for ?

Anybody know where I left my log tables ?

Nice to know I'm not alone...

cant understand a word of Petes response!

Des's website link was 'interesting'...funny though....I'm off now, to another meeting where we agree to disagree in principle and agree to have more meetings to discus...I think I'm slowly learning to switch off, not bad, its only taken me 42 years!
