Should lifts reurn to the ground floor when the fire alarm is activated

Yes I believe by default they should, assuming it has been wired to the fire alarm. There is a BS standard but the number escapes me for the moment.

No. Imagine if it was a false alarm and work was being carried out on the lift. Or if the lift was being filled with disabled persons etc in a hospital and they couldn't get to the lift.

Both right, it depends on the type and purpose of lift...a Fire protected lift comes with a number of options. I was involved with the tendering for one and the options were limitless.

However, after advice the lift was predetermined to go to the top floor and access each level on the way down, except that floor where the alarm activation took place, UNLESS overridden by fire marshals key.

I dont know if this option was actually put in place as I left long before the intended installation.

forgot to add that the protected lift was also predetermined to return to ground floor after two full travels....it had its own independant power supply and was hydraulic, which meant less hassle returning to ground if all power failled.

This was on top of the Evac-chair provision.

As for maintenance...all power was to be isolated before work could be carried out
