Hi All,

In the requirement for an excavation to be inspected daily before start of shift and also the weekly one with a report kept on file, who is the recommended competent person(s) to do this, also is it just a visual physical inspection or there are some testings to be carried out e.g further soil investigations, etc, looking at the frequent rain at the moment.

Every information will be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Austin.

If it is a massive complex excavavation with loads of risk I would have a qualified engineer, if it is a 1m deep garden trench for 1 soil pipe an experienced groundworker usually has enough savvy to decide if it is safe. Horses for courses.

There are training courses for this (water authority training centres do them)

An individual who has both practical and theoretical experience of excavation work and is therefore able to detect defects and assess their importance in relation to the strength or stability of an excavation.

As stated above, street works courses are run for excavation inspectors, because people carrying out inspections must understand a number of things, including soil conditions, the need for shoring or not as the case may be. how the weather affects excavations, and of course when to inspect, weekly or after something has happened that may affect the excavations stability.

hope this helps
Regards
Steve
