Can some one clarify a question for me.

If you have produced all the COSHH Assessments is it still a requirement to have all the safety data sheets?

Thanks

Naomi,

You would have to have had access to the MSDS in order to carry out the COSHH assessment so I would keep them in any case as evidence of how you obtained some of the information contained within your assessment.

MSDS are also periodically updated as and when the labelling requirements change due to changes in CHIP.

regards

If you have based your COSHH risk assessments on safety data sheets, be aware of their limitations. Safety data sheets are prepared for CHIP and not for COSHH and frequently do not contain the information you require for an effective risk assessment.

In addition, many safety data sheets are inaccurate. I have just evaluated seven safety data sheets for a client and six contained significant errors, such that, if taken at face value, they could have resulted in significant damage to the health of some of his workers.

So treat safety data sheets with caution. If you need more in the reasons why, just e-mail me and I will send you a copy of a document that explains this.

If you are transporting the material you should supply the MSDS to the driver with the goods and to the end user for storage details etc. The Coshh assessment is is only good for the use/application of the material.

So I would say as long as you have an inventory of the material you need to keep a msds. Not just a coshh assessment.
