I am trying (not very successfully) to develop a lone working policy, and need some help and guidance.

The company is manufacturing, involving the use of solvents.

There are occasions, as in any industry when lone working may take place. At the moment I have stipulated that a minimum of 2 persons should be on site at all times, and 1 of those should be a 1st aider. Contact is to be made by phone with a designated person every 30 minutes etc.

The problem/issue that I am facing is the fact that in some instances the 1st aider will not be from the dept that is working, and therefore will not be able to assist (e.g IT), that all lone working needs to be planned in advance etc to ensure that the designated person will be aware that they will be rung every 30 Min's, no call to ring in, no answer to get to site etc.

Question - how do other companies deal with this, and is there any chance that someone would be so kind as to provide a copy of their policy, for me to see if I am heading in the right direction?

I think we may be able to help. We manufacture and supply lone worker protection systems. If your worker is at risk of slips, falls etc or needs to raise an alert then they can. This creates an audio link either to your first aider directly or to our 24/7 monitoring centre who in turn would liaise with your first aider.
