Sorry to resurrect the old chestnut! If you are sick of the subject please click back now rather than moan about it!!

My query is whether or not the police have to be visible when carrying out mobile speed checks.

I was on the M6 north yesterday, way up past Lancaster, and as I passed under an overbridge I noticed that there were three white tripod cameras and a police van way off down the road above. The cameras looked like the traffic monitoring ones that are fixed to the railings from more than 100 yards away (at the point when they snap you!). I was doing 80mph so expect a letter shortly. I'm not bothered and will take the rap as it was deserved (won't bore you with the road was clear etc excuses!)but I am more than a bit narked that it was situated in a sparsely used part of the motorway with maximum intention to hide!

There are very specific guidance as to how such "traps" can be "set" ... why not write to the force concerned and ask them to give you verse and chapter?

Personally, I would have all cameras camouflaged and cars/vans unmarked to catch as many people as often as possible. It might make me slow down a bit too ;-)

I am sure you will find these are number plate checkers and not speed traps. The Speed traps / Vans must be visible at X metres. So hopefully no need to worry.

That would be nice. I can't really moan if they aren't but I could do with some luck as I genuinely am almost always a 70mph pootler on the motorways (saves diesel!)

I am insured etc. so if it is my plate they are after I can breathe easy!

Tabs, not 100% sure if I was still in the Lancs border or actually over into Cumbria as it goes deceptively far north, will have to wait and see if I get a letter which force it was. (Hopefully will never need to...)

Hi Ian

A couple of years ago, I worked in the police. I spent a day with a police officer in an unmarked car. I was amazed how many he caught speeding. His people skills were so good, that they kept saying thankyou to him. I would have thought that they would have been really annoyed, but no. The evidence was there for them to see.

There are many kinds of cameras, and equally as many websites where you can just post your question rather like here. If you contact the force, they have to give you an honest answer. They may ask for you to put it in writing so there is no confusion as to the question that they are answering.

Being from ROI- I have seen our local Garda who drives a motorbike standing with his speed gun in his leathers- no high vis. Bike was parked in a driveway, he was peeking out the side of a large advertising sign.

I would love to the associate RA for this- any police H&S bods please fwd to email address- purely for research!

I can see no danger when the officer is well out of danger from traffic but at the edge of a road- they cannot be following any type of SSoW.

Wooops, Just read my last post- may I add:

"the garda was holding the speed gun whilst dressed in his leathers".

Apologies

:-)

Not really my concern but. There was a fairly recent court case in which it was stated that radar is only to be used to CONFIRM a suspicion of speeding. And there is a distance limit.

A lady was being done after a reading at about 800 meters. She pleaded that at that distance they could not even have suspected that she was speeding, so the radar was not being used to confirm but as primary evidence.

She won.

I hope others can give more details of this case.

Whatever. Stay in third gear.

You can take your pick. They may have been speed cameras, but are much more likely to be ANPR cameras.
No, they do not have to be visible, they can be plain and not marked. The mobile speed cameras operated by the POLICE are not required to be marked in any way, the mobile units operated by safety camera partnerships are supposed to be marked, but many are not.
