How can we assess the safety attitudes of new employees

Posted By Martin Taylor Having just presented my standard 2 hour H and S induction program to the most disinterested group of people ever I am minded to finding some way to assess safety attitude prior to employment. Getting people interested in safety is a challenge and always will be but in a hazardous work environment where employees need to be switched onto the hazards around them if helps to start with people who have achieved some level of safety awareness.
Does anybody use tools to assess this element of attitude at interview or at least in the early stages of employment?
thanks
Martin

Posted By naomi Hi Martin I have used in the past photo's of bad practice and then asked the group/person to study the picture and comment on what they feel is wrong with the picture. I have been surprised when some employees have said nothing is wrong with it! but when i have pointed it out and what could of happened/or has happened and the consequences of it, they seem to see it all in a different light. I think we have to accept that we are all different and have different levels of understanding and this must be incorporated into our inductions for H&S. Hope this may be of some help. Naomi

Posted By Martin Taylor Thanks for the idea Naomi- I haven't used that technique before and maybe I could use a series of pictures with safety issues and use answers as a scoring system.
As you say when you get a "nothing is wrong" answer it is very concerning. In my case when asked which was worse a workman dropping a spanner and it hitting the ground or a workman dropping a spanner and killing somebody one delegate replied 'I don't know'
Anybody else using any simple tools to determine the level of safety awareness for new starters.
As Naomi says it is important to focus attention on what individuals need and what I am looking for is something to help me select the appropriate type of induction program and whether they are suitable for certain hazardous operations.
thanks
