We have had a shuffle around of training staff in our company recently and it has left me short of anyone able to do manual handling training. We discussed trying to put this into the induction package (catch ups also considered) but I was concerned about the depth of actual training at induction.

Currently we show a video (which I don't believe is sufficient as training) but does anyone else go deeper at induction level?

My problem is that we contract out our employment and HR so I need to decide if I can (for want of a better word - don't take it as it sounds) "dump" this on them at induction level or I need to train some of our guys up as trainers to go and do it at shop floor level beyond induction.

Advice / comments please?

I can only speak from personal experience. Your eventual decision may depend on the hazards faced in your organisation.

We have put in a lot of effort on manual handling. reducing lost time by approximately 80% over the past eighteen months. As part of our induction training, which runs for approximately four hours, we include a manual handling video, go through the company policy and a demonstration of lifting techniques and discuss attitudes. Trying to get people to think about what they are doing and why.

Not actually doing it yet but I am planning a 2 stage approach - 1 basic package (powerpoint and video)that can be delivered by teamleaders on the day of the induction followed up by a professional 2 hour presentation
