yes this old chestnut! how are people handling this at receiving sites. I have been told by a supplier that the HSE gave them written permission not to clip on - so are we back to training and single handrails as being adequate. Or do we all have to gantries (when bottom operated vehicles are not available) built

thanks

Its very interesting that you have been informed that the HSE have suggested that you cannot clip on....the question I would have for you is are you attching to a proprietary installed fall protections system or just the access walkway on the tanker which of course would be an "untested" anchor point.

We continually are looking at developing solutions for working on vehicles and have developed a number of very succesful solutions for tankers, RCV, Curtain Siders, PSV & Aircraft alike.

The HSE are certainly focussing a great deal of attention on falls from vehicles and rightly so as it accounts for many accidents in the workplace.

If you would like to elaborate further on the details of what you have installed I will try and offer some advice accordingly.

I very much doubt that HSE would send a letter giving permission for anything like that. There is a big campaign coming soon:

I used to work on tankers. A practical point to remember is why are people needing access to the top of the tank, usually to work with their hands taking samples and so on, therefore there is unlikely to be at least 3 points of contact with the tanker ladder at all times, i new of a couple of guys that fell from tankers and the reason on both occasions was because they had items in their hands that prevented them from holding on to the rails properly. Most tankers have an eye hole at the manhole to clip onto so by utilising this point we remedied the problem of tank top working safely. But remember those items and samples also have to come back down the ladder so instead of carrying them in our hands we used a small basket with a long chain and lowered the basket to floor level then climbed down the ladder using both hands. Problem overcome.
