Is there a rule of thumb that dictates safe working distances to excavate from multiple lift scaffold?

I appreciate that the scaffold designer will have to be consulted.

Thanks in advance.

David,

I am not aware of anything definitive on this, but a lot depends on the composition of the ground & the location of the scaffold which could also be subject to vibration from passing HGV's etc.

You should really seek expert advice before contemplating any excavations near to scaffolding.

Zyggy.

Never excavate near a scaffold without seeking advice from the scaffold contractor as may require adapting bridgeing etc

Scaffolding was usually erected as a rule of thumb were it was 1m down 1m across.

This was years ago and it is legal onus for the PC to ensure the ground is level and compacted to take the weight of such structures.

Many ways you can look at this but my recommendation is to get the Scaffolding Contractor to bridge, cantilever or add additional components, this is usually done as an extra to the scaffs delight.

I was called out to site yesterday because the utilities company had dug a 1.2m deep trench as close as 0.5m from a standard that was supporting a 10 lift high bridged access scaffold spanning nearly 6.5m! I couldn't believe that it wouldn't cross the 'diggers' mind that he might be undermining the scaffold.
Agree with general 'rule of thumb' - 1.2m 'down', at least 1.2m 'out'
