Posted By Claire Saunders We require employees who have VDU eye tests to ask their optician to complete a simple form confirming that the prescription is for VDU use and the cost of basic lens and frame. An optician recently charged the employee a £10 form filling fee. When she queried it the optician he said that "all opticians are now including this charge as part of their treatment". I have checked with the College of Optometrists who say it is up to the optician whether or not they charge.
Has anyone come across this? Is it becoming widespread practice? If it is i think the employer is going to have to meet the cost. Would be interested in the views of others.

Similar charges re other doctors etc for other services - started as a free signature now up to £50.00 for same thing
Look at all your options as there is probably a way to manage this situation
Unfortunately with the exapmle above doctors closed ranks and we are stuck with the charges

Posted By Heather Collins Try approaching a local optician - it's best if you can find one with several branches to give your employees a choice of where to go - and see if you can sort out a contract with them.
We've done this and not only do we get a cheaper rate for eye tests but they do all the paperwork and invoice us for the costs on a monthly basis. In return we send all our employees who need company-provided eyetests or glasses to this one optician.
Works for us.

Posted By Glyn Atkinson My firm also uses Specsavers, and that's where I buy my glasses for VDU work through work vouchers, but on my last eye test with my independent optometrist, there were two lines on the prescription, and he filled both lines in when I discussed work needs.
I said that I used a pc for 70% of my work time and needed a prescription for short focal work as well as my normal varifocal prescription.
There was no extra charge for this reading on the prescription.
