Looking for any ideas to eliminate / reduce falling objects eg: nuts, bolts etc when climbing or demobilising tower cranes. Currently we use lanyards on tools etc, & everything else is "controlled" by the exclusion zone setup. I am just looking for ideas I may be able to use to control the objects at source ( before they get out of the tower section & away ). I have be given the following as some ideas : catch nets, wire ties on the bolts & possibly the nuts, magnetic device to maintain a grip on the object etc. I would very much appreciate any fresh ides or perhaps photos of items that the forum may have found successful over the years. I am in high rise construction but am fairly sure that similar hazards would exist in oil rigs etc.
Cheers,
Wayne

Wayne,
you'd be right about dropped objects posing a significant risk on oil rigs. There is a great deal of equipemnt secured at height which needs securing, insoecting and maintaining.
Examples of best practice can be seen on the DROPS website. DROPS is an industry forum which looks specifically at the hazards posed by and the control of potential dropped objects.
for further information the website is

I hope this is of assistance.

Thanks for the info on the drops website, I have seen this one before & got some useful info from it. I would still be interested in seeing what measures other construction or crane companies have in place to reduce or hopefully prevent falling nuts / bolts etc when climbing tower cranes.
Where I am based, in Australia, everyone seems to just rely on the "skill" of the riggers doing the job or the good old exclusion zone method.. I was hoping that there would be someone that has been down this route before & got a better system going...matbe some engineering controls ???? Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Cheers from sunny Queensland, Australia - current temperature 28 degrees C.... just bragging a little...
