Some of our employees CSCS cards are due to expire soon, and when they have started the renewal process they have been told they can't renew unless they have an NVQ (by CSCS).
Whilst I'm all for training, there is quite a lot of them and I'm not sure how many would actually push on and complete the NVQ (they only need to be enrolled with a registration number to get their card this time).
I've looked into the ECITB passport scheme, which is a two day course with a 100 question (multiple choice) test at the end. To me this seems a lot more safety oriented than the 40 question CSCS safety test, and therefore would like to go down the Passport scheme.
Unfortunately I've now been told that on a lot of construction sites in the past, you could only get on with a CSCS card - Safety Passports were not accepted.
Is this still the case? (and therefore is the Passport scheme not viable to my company).

Hi Melanie
Unfortunately the ECITB and CSCS schemes are yet to be mutually recognised.
So you need to work out what types of site your workforce are visiting and hence look at getting one or both cards.
There was a conference some years ago intended to marry up all the schemes but not much progress since.
Regards, Peter

One other thing to look at is what discipline you are working in.
For electrical related disciplines the JIB ECS scheme which is CSCS affiliated does accept passport to safety as the H&S component.
However if CSCS are asking for a NVQ element is this to obtain a skilled card rather than something akin to a labourers card.
