Hi everyone,

I've just been chatting to someone who has been made MD of a small/medium construction company. He started as a joiner and worked his way up the ladder through Site Supervisor, Contracts Manager and Director. He has no qualifications at all just many years experience.

He has taken over from the previous MD who had no experience of construction but managed to build up the company from scratch. Now the new MD wants to go forward with a pro active health and safety view instead of the previous reactive method.

All credit to him for getting there, I just wonder what advice and guidance he could receive from us safety professionals to help him along the rocky road ahead?

Suggest he gets some very clear advice from an external professional on his responsibilities and has an independent audit undertaken of the current state of plan of HS&E compliance in the business. Start from a clean slate and get a short/medium term action plan in place.

Possibly take a look at the IOSH/HSC guidance and also recommend he looks at the Institute of Directors training courses. Directors have a special status in law and it is not just for health and safety.

Good luck, please email direct if you want further thoughts as I have been through this with some other contacts in similar positions.

Be firm but fair. People respect a strong leader just as much as they do empowerment. Striking that right balance is what good management is all about - there are no templates to work from.
