Posted By Homer Can anyone advise if soft landing bags have a shelf life if they are never actually used to absorb a fall?

Posted By David AB Thomas I believe it's manufacturer specific, as PAS 59:2004 (Incorporating Amendment No. 1), Filled collective fall arrest systems, states:
4.7.2 Instructions for installation, operation and maintenance containing at least the following … shall be supplied with every product: ...
l) information on the long-term durability and design life of the product.

Could I suggest contacting the manufacturer of the soft landing bag and ask them. If, like safety nets, they have a specific life then the manufacturer should be able to provide that information. If I'm correct the filling is basically pieces of polystyrene foam, or pellets: whether this has a specific life I'm not sure. Please email me if you find anything and I will also ask around tomorrow.
Regards
John

Posted By Frank Hopkins hi Homer,
i work for one of the largest house builders in the UK, therefore we utilise a vast amount of beanbags across the uk. Beanbags have a label on them, similar to a size label found on clothing, the label shows the date of manufacturer and also an expirey date, beyond wich the bag should not be used.
as you rightly point out, some bags reach this date without little use, and in some cases having never been used. Our company took the manufacturer to task over this as it was costing us a fortune and they eventually backed down. We no longer heed the label date and now go down the 'fit for purpose' route.
Firstly, is the external of the bag free cuts etc, are the clips still working? Secondly to test the internal of the bags, the bags are placed in a coffin style box, which has a line painted around the inside at a predetermined height, a board with a weight on it is then placed on top of the beanbag, if the board drops below the line, then the bag is no longer fit for purpose.
your supplier should be able to supply dimensions of the coffin etc.
i hope this goes someway to answering your concern.
regards
Frankie.

A housebuilder site near where I live had a security problem. Kids got on site and took some of the bean bags and ripped them open, discarding the contents in to the local river. The contents covered the width of the river (2 metres)and approx 100 metres long. Local volunteers cleared it out (all relevant precautions taken!)

Posted By Martyn Hendrie At an HSE organised seminar last year a representative from a bean bag manufacturer indicated that the expiry date is related to the fire resistance properties of the bags.
They also stated that bags could be returned and refurbished to extend their useful life.
Hope this helps
