I wonder if anyone could help me on the subject of disabled parking bays and in particular their design and size.
I've done some research which suggests that there is no national legislation governing design and size apart from Part M of the Building Regs (which applies to new builds and changes of use only). Also, there appears to be no compulsory colour of marking.
Has anyone else researched this?
Is it possible there might be local authority by-laws affecting this?
Your views would be very much appreciated.

My post must be very boring - very few views and no responses.
I know it's not exactly a Health & Safety question but if anyone has been charged with designating such bays in their company car parks I would really would appreciate hearing from them.

The detailed and correct information can be found in BS 8300 Design of buildings and
their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people — Code of practice. This is the best guidance that is available at present and is frequently referenced from within Part M.
Additional information and guidance can be obtained at http://www.cae.org.uk/ who are one of the lead bodies in this area.
Regards,
Andy Croft
PS I think some of the basic access information and audit should be part of the safety officers remit, after all, should we not be ensuring that the workplace is safe for all staff?

2.4m x 4.8 m and typical ?special needs? bays are 3.6m x 4.8m (including a 1.2m transfer zone').
This is documented best practice.

If you have any specific requirements for current staff, Access To Work staff can provide an individual assessment of the needs of that employee on site for you.
Local phone contact in Yellow Pages usually.

Bob,
I notice that here in ireland some towns have the parking bays coloured blue. Sorry dont know why blue, but i know the card supplied to persons of limited mobility is also blue.
Even though the parking spaces are usually larger, for vaild reasons, some cars/trucks park so close to the parking bay they make it very difficult to someone park in the blue parking bay.Again this goes to design layout.

How about contacting voluntary organisations which campaign for the disabled perhaps they have some guidance they can give you?
