Hi everyone
Many years ago I worked for an automotive manufacturer that implemented 5S, which was changed at a later date to 6s to include safety as the 1st followed by the other 5.
The company that I currently work for want to implement a 6S programme throughout the organisation. There is plenty of info around on the web for 5S but not much (very little at all) regarding 6S.
My questions are as follows -
Has anyone come across this before ?
What are the issues putting such an item into place ?
Does anyone have anything that they would be willing to share ?
Many thanks

Try googling Six Sigma and you will get loads of information.

6S as you have described it does not (in my knowledge) exist as a defined tool. It sounds like your business may have adopted the model to include safety as a part of it.
Six Sigma as mentioned above is a totally different technique related to statistical analysis and process management, however it has been used to solve H&S related problems.
If 5S is used correctly it fits very well with any behavioural and performance improvement techniques as it is mainly about orderliness and workplace organisation, so when hazards exist they tend to stand out more. It also encourages good operational discipline.
In a way, good H&S is integral to 5S but is not explicit.
Good luck
Ian

Darren,
5S can be developed easily into 6S - its all about order - if you do it correctly, you need not make safety the 6th S - simply incorporate it in the regime
Google it under Lean Manufacturing - not 6 -sigma which is a different tool-kit.
