Can anyone clarify whether it is a legal requirement from 2008 to have canopy and air extractor systems in place and linked to the gas supply in commercial kitchens, or is this just applicable to new builds and refurbished kitchens. I can't find anything in the gas regs

Hi
I know it does not address your question,

In Ireland according to IS820 any pumped air supplied into a place using gas must have an interlock so the gas can not be operated without the correct ventilation,

I am confident that there are now requirements for all new installiations - that can include replacing an old fan with a new fan not just a whole 'new build' situation - to comply with all the requirements that you quoted

Its causing many problems re school kitchens etc as a low cost replacement job has now turned into a high cost job

I have not yet had chance to fully review the documents etc so this is an 'off the cuff' answer

Gas interlock system is required on installation when gas is present; it has the effect of cutting the supply should the extract cease working. As for new or refurbished installations, I have never come across a commercial situation in 20 years of carrying out inspections on all types of commercial property that didn't have an extract fitted, I can't imagine you would be able to breathe without one.

Can't help on any changes for 2008, I am not aware of any......yet!
