Earth bonding containers to pour flammable liquid.

Posted By Rob Forrestall Hello Is there a right sequence to apply earth bonding straps to containers to prevent electrostatic discharge when decanting solvent paint from one container to another. The container with the pump in for painting sits in a spill tray that is earthed. Paint and thinners are mixed to create the right viscosity to run through the spay equipment, earthing the containers during mixing of liquids will prevent build up of static that could result in a possible spark. Portable earth straps will be used, can either container be connected first or does the container with the solvent need connecting first or does the container with the pump in need to be connected first? Please help!! My e-mail address is robert.forrestall@msi-forks.com

Posted By Dave Adams CMIOSH You must earth everything before any fuel / vapour is generated. Containers that are not earthed can retain a static charge. If you were then to attach an earth strap this could cause a spark which would obviously be problematic in the presence of vapour. It is also important to ensure that all containers are at the same potential.

Posted By Robert. Dave, agree with what you say. However isn't there also a need to ensure segregation from the building main earth?

Haven't come across this. Why is there this requirement?
Also guidance suggests ensuring limiting line velocity to 7m/s for miscible liquids and 1 m/s for non miscible liquids.
There is a recent PD on control of electrostatics in industry - can't remember the reference nos but I'm sure someone will post the complete reference.
