We have a storage area in our workplace that has a low ceiling that does not allow persons entering to stand up.
I have been trying to find a minimum acceptable height within various regulations but without success.
With exception to the Workplace Regs are any of you aware of where i can find mention of an acceptable height

Hi Mike
When I was in construction many years ago I seem to remember 2.3 as a min ceiling height for a habitable room not sure if it still applies though.

Mike,

Have a look at local building regs. Previous response may be correct although I thought it was 2.1m but I have been known to be wrong before.

You may find that this is not an approved storage area.

Hope this helps.

I think you need to look at 3 questions:

1 - Minimum ceiling height of habitable room. (I seem to remember 2.3, (=7.5 feet).
2 - Whether a storage area has to be "habitable".
3 - Whether the standard is retroactive (usually they aren't).

analogy: the staircase in my house is illegal by today's standards (as are the ceilings - 7'4" between beams), but I have not had to retrofit either.

Bearing in mind that H&S normally takes a "sensible" approach it may be a case of adequate warning plus all new storage areas to follow the guidelines.
