Can anyone help clarify my situation?
Having completed annual lighting maintenance we have to dispose of 250 tubes.
Reading through WEEE on Netregs, I had the initial impression that my supplier would take them back, now I'm not so sure.
Has anyone had any dealings with the consequences of these regulations?
How can I legally dispose of these tubes?
John

Hi
Contact your local waste disposal firm who will supply you with a container to place them in prior to disposal or you can reuse the packing from the new tubes. You will however need to use a licenced disposal firm to remove them

Not had to do this for a couple of years but we used to have to pay up front for the container then when full they will collect and dispose of tubes it cost about £100

The company that provide and service our general rubbish container offer this service. I have also used a specialist company specifically for mercury (both national). Email me and I will let you have their details.

My thanks to all who responded, I've been in touch with the LA and they have promised to get back with a solution.
I have to say I had been under the impression that suppliers had to belong to a "take back" scheme, whereby they were obliged to ensure that products sold were disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner. Seems I'm wrong again.
Thanks to all,
John

My understanding is that only B2C 'take back'

You should be entitled to free disposal as a business user under the WEEE Regs. However it's not necessarily your supplier who will have this responsibility as they may be just a "middle man" (defined as a distributor under the Regs).
The duty rests with the original manufacturer, importer or rebrander (defined as the producer under the Regs) who is obliged to register with a compliance scheme that either collects from you or has a disposal site easily accessible to you. Ask your supplier for the producer registration number of their supplier. The producer of the goods should then be able to tell you what you need to do.
Of course you can do as others have suggested and pay for disposal yourself... however you'll probably find that your supplier is already charging you a "WEEE disposal charge" on the purchase price of every new tube, so I wouldn't pay twice if I were you!

If taking the tubes to the distributor/supplier/producer do you need a license for transporting hazardous waste?

Mitch - no. Transporting waste (other than building or demolition waste) produced by yourself is specifically exempt from the requirement to have a carriers' licence under Reg 2(1)(b) of the The Controlled Waste (Registration of Carriers and Seizure of Vehicles) Regulations 1991.
