I have a contractor who wants to mix lime with a spoil heap to stabilise the soil. He proposes to use a loading shovel to mix the lime and soil on site. Does anyone have any information relating to this? Are there any specific regs etc?

Terry,
Lime stabilisation is a very successful method of treating poor quality soil and turning it into a solid compound.
Lime is covered under COSHH regulations. Work equipment under PUWER.
Having had over 60,000m3 treated here on site, we insisted on an exclusion zone, no mixing in windy weather, not near a water course, all operatives to wear mask and goggles to mix with impervious gloves, eye wash to hand and that mixing with soil was to take place as soon as the lime was spread out.
Please feel free to email me direct and I can discuss more with you.

Not sure how they are going to get an even mix with that method?
Ring a company like http://www.geofirma.co.uk/ and I'm sure they'll be happy to advise. They were involved with the Terminal 5 soil stabilisation.
